emme is led by women who live the mission every day: visionaries, nurturers, organizers, and truth-tellers grounded in the realities of Black and Brown motherhood. At the center of this work are Dr. Paula Garay and Samara Clark, who co-founded the emme coalition nonprofit, transforming it from a grassroots pilot into an independent 501(c)(3) organization. Drawing from their own lived experiences as survivors and advocates, Paula and Samara envisioned a model of maternal care that centers healing, justice, and joy. Their leadership is built on shared power, deep listening, and radical love for community. Together with a team of doulas, clinicians, peer mentors, and organizers, emme’s leadership continues to build something rare and essential, a movement that doesn’t just respond to maternal health inequities, but reimagines what’s possible when care is led by those most impacted.
Our frontline team is the lifeblood and the heart of emme’s mission, made up of passionate mothers, doulas, community health workers, clinicians and peer mentors who bring both professional expertise and deep lived experience to their work. They engage with families where they are, physically, emotionally, and culturally, offering trauma-informed care, culturally responsive education, and unwavering support throughout pregnancy, birth, and early parenting. These frontline champions build strong, trusting relationships that foster safety and empowerment. They advocate tirelessly, navigate complex systems alongside families, and hold space for healing from generational trauma. Rooted in resilience and empathy, the frontline team is central to creating meaningful, lasting change for Black and Brown mothers, their babies, their growing families and their promising futures.
